Our story did not begin with a grand plan. It unfolded step by step.

In 2021, we purchased our home in Speculator. At the time, we were weekenders. We came for the hiking trails, the snowmobiling routes, mornings by Lake Pleasant, and the quiet beauty of the Adirondacks. Each visit strengthened our love for this town and the people who call it home.

While growing up in New Jersey, Phillip remembers his childhood spending many fun summers and winters in Speculator. When we met in 2019, Phillip returned to Speculator to revisit those memories and I fell in love with it too. Eventually we decided to make the move to New York, first living in Saugerties, and eventually Albany. With every move north, we felt closer to the life we truly wanted. Yet we were living between two places; our hearts in Speculator while our daily lives were elsewhere.

Phillip was working in IT and searching for a deeper sense of purpose, but none of the paths he was exploring seemed to make sense. We both felt called to create something that mattered and bounced around a lot of ideas for how we could make a life in Speculator possible. We began exploring the possibility of taking over the diner space in town after a few nudges. We told ourselves we would continue pursuing it until we hit resistance.

We never did.

Instead, doors continued to open. Conversations aligned. The details came together in ways we could not have orchestrated on our own. We believe God was gently guiding us toward this step; toward building a space that would serve the community in a real and lasting way.

We were ready to stop living a split life and plant roots fully in the place we loved.

Honoring a Longstanding Tradition

The building that now houses The Village Social has served this community for many years. For over two decades, Pam’s Sunrise Diner was a familiar and cherished gathering place in Speculator.

One of the constants during those years was Tom.

Tom cooked at the Sunrise Diner for nearly twenty years. His food became part of people’s memories. Weekend breakfasts before snowmobiling. Summer mornings before heading to Lake Pleasant. Conversations shared over coffee.

When we stepped into this space with a new vision, Tom felt called back to the kitchen. His return has meant so much to so many. It has been a gift to witness the joy on people’s faces when they see him behind the grill again.

We are deeply grateful to carry forward the legacy of good food and familiar hospitality while building something new.

An Adirondack Diner in the Heart of Speculator

We are located right in the center of town, with easy access to snowmobile trails, just minutes from Lake Pleasant and Oak Mountain. Whether you are visiting during summer lake season, fall foliage, or winter snowmobiling, we hope The Village Social becomes a stop you look forward to.

We welcome locals who live here year round, weekend homeowners, hikers, families, travelers heading north, and anyone passing through Hamilton County.

Food Made with Care

Food quality matters to us.

Our Challah French Toast has become a favorite, our Eggs Mediterranean bring bold flavor to the breakfast table, the Mexican Omelet is hearty and satisfying, our Reuben Sandwiches are stacked generously, and the CBA Sandwich has built a following of its own.

Supporting local producers is important to us. Every pancake and French toast plate is served with McCombs Maple Syrup, a local producer right here in Speculator.

Our coffee has been receiving wonderful feedback, and we are excited to offer gluten free bread options so more people can gather comfortably at the table.

Designed with Intention

I bring a background in design and branding, along with years of restaurant experience. Every detail of The Village Social has been thoughtfully considered, from the name to the atmosphere, to the feeling we hope you experience when you walk through the door.

Phillip came from a very different path but brings management experience in running the daily operations. This industry was not something he imagined himself stepping into, yet sometimes purpose finds you in places you never expected. Together we are learning, growing, and building something that reflects our faith, our values, and our love for this town.
